Housed in the Department of Geography, Sustainability, Community, and Urban Studies, the geography area provides a collective space for thinking broadly and holistically about the social, environmental and economic challenges we are facing. Our research integrates across humans, environment, technology, and economics with perspectives of space and place that emphasize equity and justice. See Our Values.
We are inclusive and collaborative. Our faculty work on critical research across four thematic areas: Spatial Analysis of Social Issues Human Environment Dynamics, Geographic Information Science, and Earth System Science, with specific topics including Health Geography, Climate Science, Social Perspectives on Wind Energy, Risk and Resilience to Geologic and Climate Hazards. Check our faculty research pages.
We are award-winning educators, committed to the development of our students as purposeful change-makers with competence in the social, humanistic, and technological skills essential to address the challenges and opportunities of coming decades.
Undergraduate students have options to focus on Climate Environment and Society, or Humans in a Globalizing World (BA or BS in Geography), or Geographic Information Science (BS or BA in GIS). See our Undergraduate program pages.
Our graduate students are the lifeblood of our community, and we offer professional development in research, teaching and community engagement, as well as personal mentoring. Graduate students have opportunities to work with our world class faculty in research areas described above. Check out our graduate student publications and theses pages, and the Graduate program pages.
We are embedded in community. From health and water, to sustainable food systems, to resilience to hazards, our research and teaching is inspired by and serves communities, both local and international. See Geography News and Events Calendar.
